The second most important dress you’ll ever buy

Choosing a dress for prom is up there with choosing a wedding dress.

Maybe we exaggerate but it’s a pretty huge part of your prom prep.
The first thing to do is to is to decide what sort of look you want to go for. Are you thinking something on trend or something crazy that will make you stand out from the crowd? GaGa at the Grammys or just the classic prom dress? Either way you need to decide; you can’t even begin to go shopping if you haven’t got the look you want clear in your head. Remember though, this is one of the last times you’ll see some people from school and your image tonight may well be how they remember you. This is not a decision to be taken lightly!

Once you know what style you want to go for, it may help to flick through magazines to see which celebs are channelling that look to get some inspiration. Here are a few ideas that we came up with from this years Grammys to get you started…

On trend: Miley Cyrus at the 2010 Grammy Awards. Miley didn’t go for your typical red carpet gown but it was never the less very on trend and she looked pretty damn hot. She was wearing a denim Hervé Léger spring 2010 bandage dress and open toe ankle shoes, both smoking looks for this season.

Something crazy: It would be easy to use Gaga as an example but lets face it no one would ever wear anything like that for prom so we’ll go for Rihanna instead. We used to think she had a pretty wild sense of style but now looks pretty mild next to Lady Gaga.
Rihanna actually went for something surprisingly sophisticated but with an edge, which is an easily achievable look for prom and something that would give you the wow factor. Rihanna sparkled in an Elie Saab couture gown, with lashings of ruffles and a daring thigh-high split.

Classic prom: When we say classic prom there are actually two options, there is your classic classic prom dress a la Grease, you know the one we mean or something which is just very demure, slightly sexy, the sort of dress people say you look beautiful in. The Queen of this type of dress has to be Taylor Swift. She always looks glam, never trashy and this years Grammys were no exception. She wore a sapphire, off-the-shoulder Kaufman Franco gown, accessorised with chandelier earrings and a 1920s-style sideswept ‘do.

So now you have your inspiration, its time to get shopping. Good luck girls!
