Song of the week-Katy Perry-Firework

This is a new feature where we choose a song of the week with the idea that we’ll use to build up the ultimate prom playlist.

Our first choice is Firework by Katy Perry. It’s about having a bit of self respect and confidence in who you are. It follows a few teenagers who we assume are sick, struggling with their looks or coming to terms with their sexuality. The song is pretty anthemic with climaxes for each character that will put a lump in your throat. Our favourite mini-story is the larger girl at the pool party surrounded by impossibly skinny friends and eventually strips down to her underwear and jumps in.

Best lyric?

You don’t have to feel like a waste of space
You’re original, cannot be replaced
If you only knew what the future holds
After a hurricane comes a rainbow

It’s like an updated “Beautiful” by Christina Aguilera and we love it!

Know a song you think we should cover next week? Let us know!
