How to choose a Band for your event

This is a guest post by Robert Digweed from The Robert Digweed Quartet

When organising an event it is easy to overlook your entertainment budget in favour of other luxurious extras, yet booking the right kind of entertainment can make all the difference when creating an atmosphere for your event, and can make the crucial difference between an average event and a spectacular memorable evening. There are many options available when booking entertainment, whether you want magicians, dancers or a form of musical entertainment.

You should be mindful when selecting your musical entertainment, be sure you know what you are booking. The first thing to decide is what kind of music you want (which may be dictated by themed events), whether it be a jazz band, a fifties rock ‘n’ roll band, or a function band playing pop covers. Will you want vocal sets, or purely instrumental music, or a mixed set? Be sure to check out the band you book, watch videos and arrange to listen to the band at a live gig prior to your event; above all make sure the band does what you want it to. You should question the requirements of the music; is it to be background music, or music to dance to?

You can expect to pay between £200-600 for a band for an evening’s entertainment. I always caution organiser’s when they book acts for under £200 with less than four members as there are many amateur bands looking to make some easy cash without having any real expertise. You may be lucky and know a talented mate offering mates rates, but you could equally end up with a very unprofessional act, which could potentially ruin the atmosphere of your whole evening. A professional band will be organised and in regular contact, produce an invoice, sort the necessary equipment, and be punctual and well presented for the event. Overall, you will be looking for a reliable service, which removes as much stress from the organising process as possible and a professional band should do just that. Good Luck.

My jazz band, The Robert Digweed Quartet, offers several packages at reasonable prices. Our default line-up is an instrumental quartet, consisting of sax, piano, bass and drums, playing a mixed repertoire of jazz, swing, funk and pop standards. We also offer a Jazz Trio and piano-sax duet for lower budgets or smaller events. However, vocal sets can also be integrated with any of these ensembles, which can provide an extra appeal for certain events.

Reverend Ribble & The Gingernuts are an eccentric fifties rock ‘n’ roll band for more adventurous events. They are guaranteed to rock your event and get everybody dancing, and can contribute greatly to events with a retro vibe. Why settle for an ordinary function band, why not try something a bit different?
