Disney’s Prom has been out for a few days now, breathing fresh life to the classic prom format. PROM tells us multiple overlapping stories in the lead up to the most important night in high school. As the almost mythical event draws nearer, one of the girls, Nova Prescott (Aimee Teegarden) faces a difficult decision between her perfect prom or the guy threatening to shake it up (Thomas McDonell). Who will earn the boutonniere and a place at Nova’s side for prom? PROM treats us to all the insecurity, anticipation, blossoming love and heartache that lead up to the most memorable night of these teens’ lives.

We’ve seen Daniel Radcliffe grow into a multi-talented young man as Harry Potter, now just imagine recreating the Yule Ball with this well-dressed wizard!

McDonell’s experienced as a date after his starring role in PROM. The hunk is to play a younger version of scrumptious Johnny Depp’s character in an upcoming film! Quite a catch.

Prom movie review

After weeks of waiting, last night I finally got a chance to watch Prom. Did it live up to expectations? You bet!

It’s got something for everyone; if you were excited about your prom before, you’ll be at breaking point after watching this. Not that excited and dragged to this by your mates? I guarantee you’ll leave understanding why prom is special for everybody. It might be dressed up in slightly cloying American sweetness and optimism but there’s no question it’ll rub off on you.

The film follows a group of highschool friends in the run-up to their prom. Nova Prescott is the head of her prom committee and totally sold on the absolute importance of the night. Some of her helpers are rather less so and nobody more than school bad-boy Jesse Richter (heart-throb Thomas McDonell). After Jesse gets on the wrong side of his headteacher he’s forced to help Nova prepare for prom night after a fire burns down all of the original decorations. They’re equally unhappy to work with each other but before long, Nova starts to develop feelings for Jesse.

She loves it. He hates it. We love him!

What’s great about the film is the variety of characters, from the super cool to the super nerdy. Everybody gets their story told and you’re sure to identify with somebody. My favourite? Rolo, a super chilled out guy who’s got a wild imagination… or does he? He’ll keep you laughing throughout the film; he deserves a show of his own!

Other highlights are the fashion; there are some amazing prom dresses in this film. In one scene, Nova drags Jesse prom dress shopping, every mans worst nightmare but every girls dream. She tries one beautiful dress on after another while Jesse comes out with the immortal line “Tuxedos are the ultimate symbol of conformity that a bunch of other guys have already sweated in”. Pretty much sums up the boy/girl divide in prom excitement eh?

Prom dress galore!

If you’re planning a prom, you’re going to get some great inspiration from this film. The Starry Night theme is simple but really effective and cheap to replicate; you can be sure plenty of prom committees will be trying this out next year. The Slushy Fountain that forms the centre-piece of the theme is an amazing idea for non-alcoholic proms that takes the decoration to a whole new level.

What the audience thought

After the film we spoke to Aileen and Carolein, two students who have their own prom coming up next year. They loved it and were surprised that it was a lot funnier than they expected. Carolein said that it had given her new ideas for her school prom and she was even more excited about the whole thing now. The verdict on Thomas McDonnell? The best thing about the film!

Prom soundtrack released!

In case you’d forgotten (we hadn’t!), Disney’s PROM is released this Friday. You can now get it in the UK-click here to get it at Amazon!

It’s a great album with a lot of really strong tracks. We still really love the Travie McCoy song and there are a few surprises too; the Passion Pit song, Dreams is really beautiful and the song from the trailer Almost There by Opus Orange with Lauren Hill features and for us, is the best moment on the whole album.

I know you’re dying to see the film and we’ve got our hands on one of the key clips from the film, the scene you will have seen from the trailer where Justin (played by Jared Kuznitz) asks Mei (Yin Chang) to Prom.

Welcome to a new section from Poppy LeMar. She’s in the middle of organising her Sixth Form prom in Central London. She’s such an expert we’ve asked her to blog for us in the coming months to share her advice and learn from her problems and triumphs…

9 Hours.
36 Minutes.
42 Seconds.

That’s how long I have till my Yr13 leavers’ prom, and the last thing I’m worried about is my dress. My 6th form prom is my event of the year. I was the first person to buy my prom ticket, number 001. I doubt I will even be able to get ready at home, let alone go to the salon to get my hair done. That’s because I am organising it. I was awarded the job in February 2010, after gaining the position as ‘Social Secretary’ aka Prom Organiser. I was delighted.

Fast-forward to September 2010. The school prom is dancing around at the back of my mind, its almost midnight, I’m on the computer and decide to casually browse some venues. I found a venue comparison site (I advise you to use one, they’re a big time saver) a few venues had small appeal, some none at all. I click the next link on the page. I had found the prom venue. It was love at first sight.

I again had surrendered to my personality. I strive to have the best of the best. I don’t like to be compared to anything, and I do like to get my own way, which luckily I generally manage to get it. The prom venue was expensive, but I loved it. I showed some people to get opinions, everyone agreed my choice was spectacular. Yet I knew I was going to be questioned about price by teachers. I needed people on side, and I needed them on side quick!

So when you’re looking for your venue remember some of these things-they will make your life easier, I promise!

Does your school have contacts from previous years? You may get a loyalty discount!

How far away is it? Remember to measure the distance from your school, not your personal address!

What facilities do they have? If you want food and drinks at your prom you will need a kitchen, or preparation space. You may need a bar. Do you want a cloakroom? One room or more?

What is the venue’s hire policy? Not all venues will take a booking for a high school prom and some will only do it if there are a sufficent amount of staff. If the venue don’t want to hire it out due to the nature of the event, stay calm, and try to negotiate if you’re set on it but stop and think…do you want to work with people like that?

What do other guests think? Just because you like it doesn’t mean everyone will, make sure there is a positive response from your peers.

What’s it going to set you back? Be realistic! This will be the major dent in your budget!

Have you got alternative choices and dates? Have more than one choice, have 3 or 4 over all, as your first may not be able to cater to you.

And if you only do one thing, please visit your venue before you book! I am begging you, visit the venue in person. Pictures on the webpage may be pretty, but they can also be deceptive!

Glee Prom Episode

As school prom season is fast approaching, Glee seriously got us in the mood with their prom episode. And oh my goodness what an episode, we have to say it’s our favourite so far and not just because it was prom themed.

It had all the ingredients for a great prom, the obligatory pre prom break-up, the overweight girl who doesn’t have a date and the totally essential plan to spike the punch.
But what made this episode so great and promtastic was firstly the fact that the Glee club were asked to sing at prom and secondly the race for prom King and Queen.

In the weeks up to prom the various couples on the show were fighting it out with campaigns to win the crown. We were rooting for Puck and Lauren to win it because that would have been amazing don’t you think? The rebel and the overweight girl beating the pretty couple. Yes please.
Anyway it all really kicks off with the return of Jesse St.James. Finn is far from happy when he finds out he’s going to prom with Rachel and it ends in a fight on the dance floor leaving Quinn alone and crownless. And she slaps Rachel, Oh! The Drama!

We won’t give away who actually gets the crown just in case you haven’t seen it but trust us it’s as high drama as you would hope from Glee.

Finally the tunes are simply amazing in this episode. There’s Rachel singing Adele’s Rolling in the Deep with Jesse, Artie, Puck and Sam rock out to Rebecca Black’s Friday and somehow make it seem cool. And then to top it all Santana and Mercedes end it all by belting out Abba’s Dancing Queen. Could it get any better than that?

All we can say is we wish all proms were so drama-filled and gleeful! What did you all think about it? And btw is Finn going to get back with Rachel? Fingers crossed.

Prom Film Premiere in Hollywood

We’ve still got 14 days to wait until Prom is released in the UK but over in the states it’s already out and there was a massive premiere to celebrate it. All of the stars of the film were there in some great outfits you can check out below including some people you might not have expected to see! In case you were wondering, the reviews have been great . According to Box Office Magazine it’s “A surprise for those expecting a watered-down High School Musical, Prom is a highly entertaining original movie that’s funny, touching and real.” Read on to see some of our favourite pictures from the opening night!

Would you please witness the fitness of Thomas Mcdonell on the red carpet? Aimee Teegarden is looking super pretty in a floor length grecian style silver gown but if anything that just makes us more jealous that she’s got Thomas Mcdonell as her date! It seems churlish to point out his shoes are scruffy and that his trousers don’t match the jacket when he’s wearing the look so well.

Meanwhile Kylie Bunbury, who plays popular girl, Jordan went for a plain party dress, steering clear of the Prom dress theme. We think she missed an opportunity here, what’s a red carpet for if not going all out on an over the top dress?

Janelle Ortiz (gossip crazy Ali) and Yin Chang (one half of the film’s perfect couple) look really cute together in two great dresses. Janelle’s dress makes the most of her assets without being too over the top in a beautifully detailed blue dress while Yin Chang looks ethereal in a floaty gown.

Best buds

Our prize for the most glam on the night goes to Danielle Campbell who plays the recently blossoming girl Simone in the movie. Judging by her look now, she’s well and truly blossomed. It’s a gorgeous dress and her hair is perfect. Something tells us she’d not be waiting long to be asked to dance at a real prom. Notice the massive ring on her left hand too, nice accesorising!

Yes, it’s poor Rebecca Black, victim of the biggest bullying campaign the world has ever seen. We’re glad to see she was out looking really happy. Not so sure about the dress though, don’t you think it’s a bit shapeless?
