Song of the week-Katy Perry-Firework

Song of the week-Katy Perry-Firework
This is a new feature where we choose a song of the week with the idea that we’ll use to build up the ultimate prom playlist. Our first choice is Firework by Katy Perry. It’s about having a bit of self respect and confidence in who you are. It follows a few teenagers who we assume are sick, struggling with their looks or coming to terms with their sexuality. The song is pretty anthemic...

Banned from Prom!

Banned from Prom!
I read an article this weekend about students being warned they wouldn’t be allowed to attend their prom if they missed classes. Fair enough, you might think but then I looked more closely and realised that these were extra classes, scheduled after the normal school day. It seems like the school had put on these lessons because exam grades weren’t high enough and they needed extra tuition....

The gay Prom Queen

The gay Prom Queen
After a depressing few weeks of news about gay students who’ve taken their lives after being bullied (google Asher Brown, or Billy Lucas) we were happy to read about a guy over in California who was voted Prom Queen at his high school. While it initially started out as a joke, the school quickly got behind his campaign to be queen of the school and on the night he was duly crowned. In case...

Where have all the Prom Queens gone?

Where have all the Prom Queens gone?
Think of any movie with a prom scene and chances are at some point you’ll get a couple chosen as Prom King & Queen. They both get sashes, the girl gets a tiara, the guy gets a crown-you know how it works. So why isn’t this popular in our homegrown proms? There’s the risk it can turn into a popularity contest where the most beautiful have their status made explicit. The hot...

My School Prom-BBC 3

My School Prom-BBC 3
Did anybody else see the My School Prom show on BBC 3 the other night? ┬áIt’s still on iPlayer for a few more days here. It was great to see a whole hour long programme on the subject we’re all about but I wish it could have been on a bit closer to when people are actually planning for their prom. The different year 11s filmed made a pretty good dos and don’ts we can all learn from....

Choosing the right DJ

Choosing the right DJ
It’s really important when looking for suppliers and services for your prom that you get the right people. For different events there will be different “right” people – depending on the location, the style and theme of the event you’re planning and the general atmosphere you wish to create.
